ANNUAL is a brand that specializes in New Zealand wool.
"WORK IN PROGRESS" is a web content that depicts the behind-the-scenes of the ANNUAL products.
We will introduce the creators' thoughts and how their products were made.
The second one is Voile Sheer Shirts
This is ANNUAL's first non-knit product.
ANNUAL launched its e-commerce website in 2020 and has been releasing new knitwear products once a year.
Taking full advantage of the benefits of wool, we decided to create products for the spring/summer 2024 season with the desire to "deliver products to everyone throughout the year."
The project began at the beginning of 2023. I had a vague idea that it might be possible to make a wool T-shirt.
Many people may feel uncomfortable wearing wool in spring and summer,
Wool is a must-have base layer for mountain climbers because it is such a functional material.
If you think about it, this makes sense, as it helps sheep living in the mountains regulate their body temperature.
We wanted to make a heavyweight T-shirt out of this functional wool that wouldn't show off our body lines, so we began our search for and development of the fabric.
While searching for fabric, we had the opportunity to receive a presentation from The Woolmark Company, who we work with. (The Woolmark Company: https://www.woolmark.jp/about/ )
Wool has excellent draping properties, but on the other hand, it has a tendency to become loose.
However, there I found a sample of a wool T-shirt with a firmness I had never seen before.
The secret to achieving that firmness lies in the way the thread is made.
Usually, after shorn wool is washed, it goes through a process called carding, where the fibers are loosened and made into rope-like fibers. The rope-like slivers are then stretched and scraped with a comb to make them of a uniform thickness, after which they are spun.
It is common for wool to be blended with cotton or synthetic fibers during the spinning process, or for the finished wool single yarn to be twisted with other materials to make yarn, but the manufacturing process for this yarn was completely different from anything I had seen before.
The filaments are electrically opened and the long fibers (polyester) are mixed with short fibers (wool).
This makes it possible to create strong threads that are 80 times thinner than what was possible with wool.
In addition, the characteristics of polyester give the fabric a firmness, reducing the droopiness that is typical of wool.
There are many other benefits to containing polyester, such as wrinkle resistance and excellent washability.
In addition to that, this elegant transparency... I thought it would be nice to have a shirt that you can wear lightly in the summer, not a T-shirt! With that in mind, the planning started.
This product is a simple band collar shirt at first glance. The buttons are also dyed the same color, making it an item that can be easily matched with various items and will not clash with your wardrobe.
On the other hand, we paid particular attention to the sleeve pattern, and even here it is packed with small details.
Unlike regular shirt sleeves, these have 1.5 sleeves and a three-dimensional pattern that allows the sleeves to swing out toward the front, as if wearing a jacket.
Furthermore, the seam allowance is exposed by 0.8cm to add a little accent. The fabric has a firm texture, giving the garment a simple yet three-dimensional silhouette.
The raw materials are from New Zealand, spun in Malaysia, and the fabric developed and sewn in Japan, making this a carefully crafted shirt.
This is the season when the air conditioner makes you feel cold. Voile Sheer Shirts are the perfect item.
You can quickly throw it on when it's chilly on the train or in the office, and it's wrinkle-resistant, so why not keep one in your bag?
